Chottogram election: Brother hacked to death outside the center

One person has been killed in a clash between supporters of Awami League and rebel councilor candidates in Pahartali during the Chittagong City Corporation elections. Nizamuddin was hacked to death by his own brother Salauddin. 

Pahartali Police Station OC (Investigation) Rashedul Haque confirmed the matter to media.

The deceased was identified as Nizamuddin, an activist of Awami League’s rebel councilor candidate Saber Ahmed of Ward 12 (Saraipara). The killer Salauddin Kamrul is an activist of Awami League-backed councilor candidate Nurul Amin in Saraipara ward 12.

The incident took place around 10:30 am on Wednesday (January 26). Earlier, simultaneous polling started at 835 centers in the city from 8 am. Then around 10 am clashes broke out between supporters of Awami League and rebel councilor candidates in Pahartali and Lalkhan Bazar areas. 10 people were injured in that clash. It is learned that motorcycles were also set on fire. 

Meanwhile, for the first time, voting is being done in EVM (Electronic Voting Machine) in all the centers of the city. Apart from two candidates from Awami League and BNP, five more candidates are contesting for the post of mayor in Chittagong city elections this time.

On the other hand, there are 238 candidates for 39 general councilors and 14 reserved women councilors. The Election Commission has identified 418 out of 635 centers as important this year.

Additional police have been deployed for the security of these centers. In addition, the city is under the surveillance of intelligence throughout the day.

The sixth election was scheduled to be held on March 29, 2020 in Chittagong City Corporation, but it was postponed eight days before the election due to Corona. After that, as the situation improved, the commission fixed the polling day.

Voting will be held in 64 booths of 635 centers in this election. 6 mayoral and 225 councilor candidates are contesting in this.
