The Dhaka-New Jalpaiguri train will run twice a week

The passenger train from Dhaka to New Jalpaiguri in West Bengal, India will be launched on March 26. The information was given after a meeting of railway officials of the two countries on Wednesday. This will be the third railway service of Bangladesh with West Bengal. The train will run every Monday and Thursday. 

Rabindra Kumar Verma, DRM (Divisional Railway Manager), Katihar Division, Indian Railways, told reporters. Concerned officials of Bangladesh Railway have also admitted it. It is planned to start this train service from Dhaka Cantonment to New Jalpaiguri or NJP in West Bengal on the occasion of the golden jubilee of Bangladesh’s independence and the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. 

Bangladesh Railway Director General Dhirendranath Majumder told Dhaka Post this afternoon, “We want to increase railways and trains between the two countries.”

On 14 April 2006, the first passenger train, the Maitri Express, was launched between Dhaka and Kolkata on the Bengali New Year. On November 9, 2016, the second railway service ‘Bondhan Express’ was launched with Khulna and Kolkata. 

Several officials of the management branch of Bangladesh Railway told Dhaka Post that train services are being increased to increase trade and tourism between Bangladesh and India. 

The name and ticket price of the train that will be launched from the capital Dhaka to New Jalpaiguri in India on March 26 will be fixed soon. The train will have 10 compartments. It will run from Dhaka to New Jalpaiguri in 9 hours. 

Mohammad Shahidullah Islam, Divisional Railway Manager, Bangladesh, Rabindra Kumar, Divisional Manager, North Frontier Railway, India and Shailendra, DRM, Sealdah Division also briefed the Indian media at a joint press conference. Source: Dhaka Post
