Al Jazeera fails to link PM to allegations

An hour-long report was broadcast. The name of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is being mentioned. Complaining. But he (the Prime Minister) could not show any connection.

Kamal Ul Alam, a senior lawyer who has been appointed as Amicus Curiae, told the court in the context of Al Jazeera’s recently aired documentary ‘All the Prime Minister’s Men’. He said that if the head of a democratically elected state is disputed, then the state itself is disputed.

Kamal Ul Alam, who is in charge of Amicus Curiae, took part in a hearing on the admissibility of a writ petition seeking directions to stop Al Jazeera from broadcasting in Bangladesh on Monday (February 15th).

At the time, he said, the writ petitioner had no reason to be offended. The writ is not admissible. Justice Md. Mujibur Rahman Mia and Justice. The High Court bench comprising Kamrul Hossain Mollah heard the case of Kamal-ul-Alam.

Earlier, two more Amicus Curiae members presented their statements in court. Lawyers AJ Mohammad Ali and Fida M Kamal also ruled that the writ was not admissible.

Three more lawyers will present their case as amicus curiae. They are lawyer Abdul Matin Khasru, Prabir Niyogi and Shahdin Malik.

The High Court on February 10 announced the names of six lawyers as amicus curiae to comment on five issues, including the admissibility of a writ petition seeking directions to shut down Al-Jazeera, a Qatar-based television channel, in Bangladesh.

Amicus Curiae is the court’s legal assistant. Al-Jazeera’s documentary from the court on the writ petitioner’s grievances, whether an order issued by this court in accordance with the writ petition can be enforced in the case of a foreign TV channel, whether the writ (mandamas) runs without any legal notice. Amicus Curiae has been asked to comment on whether there is a need to issue a directive to shut down all media, whether it is necessary to issue a directive in the context of a writ petition so late after the release of the documentary on February 1.

Al Jazeera aired a report on the night of February 1 entitled “All the Prime Minister’s Men.” Supreme Court lawyer Enamul Kabir Emon filed the writ petition on February 8 seeking directions to shut down Al Jazeera’s broadcasting and website in the country, calling the video-based documentary misleading, hateful and defamatory. Emon is the general secretary of Sunamganj district Awami League.

The foreign ministry called the report on Al Jazeera “false and insulting.” The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) of the Ministry of Defense also strongly condemned and protested the report. Bangladesh Police also protested.
