UN Secretary General praises Bangladesh

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has praised the comprehensive measures taken by Bangladesh to address the health and socio-economic challenges posed by the Covid-19 epidemic.

Bangladesh Foreign Minister on Thursday afternoon (February 25) local time in the United States. The UN Secretary General praised this in a virtual discussion with AK Momen.

Citing the past record of Bangladesh’s success in disaster management, Secretary-General Guterres said, “Bangladesh has always been at the forefront of global risk mitigation, so I am not at all surprised to see Bangladesh’s success in coping with Covid-19.” The UN Secretary General praised the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, especially her strong commitment to the people of Bangladesh.

During the talks, both the Foreign Minister of Bangladesh and the UN Secretary General agreed that the Covid-19 vaccine should be considered a ‘global asset’.

The Secretary-General praised the generosity shown by Bangladesh in providing shelter to the forcibly displaced Rohingyas. “Our goal is the same, and that is to send the Rohingya back to Myanmar,” he said. The Secretary General also said that the United Nations is always ready to assist Bangladesh in resolving the issue. In Bhasanchar, the Foreign Minister briefed the Secretary-General on the steps taken by the Government of Bangladesh and requested UN humanitarian assistance for the Rohingya there.

The Foreign Minister praised the strong commitment of the UN Secretary General to the climate program. AK Momen. He welcomed the Secretary-General’s call to mobilize climate finance. As the President of the Climate Venerable Forum, Bangladesh will continue to work with the United Nations to achieve its climate goals and to make the COP-28 to be held in Glasgow this year a success, the Foreign Minister said.

Calling the fight against climate change a battle of his life, the UN secretary-general said he would try to persuade donors to allocate 50 per cent of the proposed climate fund to the implementation of the adaptation strategy. Guterres described the massive adaptation program in the coastal areas and the steps taken by Bangladesh in river management as “extraordinary”.

Among other issues, the Foreign Minister simultaneously discussed the birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the father of the Bengali nation and the golden jubilee of Bangladesh, peacekeeping activities in the world and the re-election of the Secretary General. The Foreign Minister invited the Secretary General to take part in the celebrations of the birth centenary of the Father of the Nation and the golden jubilee of Bangladesh’s independence.

Ambassador of Bangladesh to the United Nations Rabab Fatima was present at the virtual meeting.
