RAB has arrested Iqbal Hossain, who was sentenced to life imprisonment for attacking an Awami League rally on August 21. According to RAB, Iqbal threw a grenade on the stage of Sheikh Hasina’s meeting in 2004. 

He was arrested in a raid in Diabari area of ​​the capital late on Monday night. 

RAB Director General Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun told a news conference on Tuesday that during preliminary interrogation, Iqbal said that Iqbal had thrown a grenade at the stage on the instructions of Mufti Hannan.

The RAB director general said Iqbal fled to Malaysia in 2008. When he was identified as an illegal immigrant late last year, the Malaysian government sent him back to Dhaka. He was arrested in a joint effort by the National Security Intelligence (NSI) and the RAB.

Although 33 convicts convicted in the August 21, 2004 grenade attack case were in jail, 18 escaped. As Iqbal was arrested, 15 people are now on the run.

The trial court gave its verdict on October 10, 2016 after overcoming various obstacles in the case of grenade attack on the rally of Awami League President Sheikh Hasina.

Dhaka’s No. 1 speedy trial tribunal sentenced 19 people, including state minister for home Lutfuzzaman Babar and deputy minister Abdus Salam Pintu, to death in the BNP-Jamaat alliance government.

Nineteen people, including then-Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s son Tariq Rahman, were sentenced to life in prison. Another 11 people were sentenced to different terms.
